Why the Exumas in the Bahamas is the next big summer charter destination

Strategically located in the Atlantic Ocean, southeast of Florida, the Bahamas, an island nation comprising over 700 islands and cays, is rapidly becoming ‘the’ summer charter destination of the moment. A region that brings images of paradise, perfect swaying palms on white-sand beaches surrounded by spectacular turquoise waters to mind, the Bahamas have long been a favorite winter destination for many owners and charters alike. However, the Bahamas has experienced a significant uptick in popularity in recent years and is a booming year-round yachting destination, with interest in charter through the Exumas in particular on the rise. Thanks in part to the region’s increasing ability to accommodate larger yachts, coupled with the extensive development of new marinas and eco-friendly tourism initiatives, a summer charter through the Exumas never seemed quite as enticing.

A large chunk of the recent boom in the Bahamas yachting scene can be traced back to the outbreak of Covid-19. Rather than shutting down like most other countries in the Caribbean, the country implemented a health visa system that allowed it to remain open, making the Bahamas a safe travel haven for yacht owners and charters alike seeking refuge from global restrictions. As a result, many yachts and superyachts began frequenting the Bahamas, and demand for larger superyachts for charter, such as the 73m Titania from Lurssen, started to uptick. The Exumas, a chain of 365 cays in the Bahamas, became particularly popular during and after this period, offering a mix of natural beauty and new infrastructure to accommodate this influx.

However, one of the most significant developments that fuelled the Bahamas’ popularity is the expansion of marina facilities capable of hosting larger superyachts. For example, Albany Marina on New Providence can accommodate superyachts up to 76 meters, and a new marina on Norman’s Cay can welcome yachts up to 64 meters in length. Previously considered a destination primarily for smaller, shallow-draft vessels, the addition of these marinas, among other tourism and business developments, has opened the door for a new class of superyachts to explore the Exumas. Other advancements, such as state-of-the-art sea mapping, new routes, and the availability of anchorages away from the islands, have also made it possible for superyachts with deeper drafts to navigate the region safely.

In addition to marina expansions, the Bahamas has seen a surge in business development, particularly in eco-tourism. Developers are increasingly focused on balancing the preservation of the islands’ natural beauty with the demands of growing tourism to maintain the region’s appeal. On Cave Cay, approval has been given to build a stunning $550 million luxury resort complete with a marina, while other developments are taking place on Big Sampson and Little Sampson Cays. However, the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, the first national park in the Bahamas, continues to thrive under strict regulations. Any form of construction is restricted within these areas to protect marine wildlife breeding grounds, and yachts are required to adhere to stringent guidelines. For example, organizing a beach barbecue within Exuma Park comes with a fee of $1,100. The park, along with other protected areas, ensures that the Bahamas remains a sanctuary for both visitors and the environment.

There are several must-visit spots for those considering a summer yacht charter in the Exumas. Coco Plum Beach, famous for its shallow, clear waters and marine life, is perfect for families. Hoopers Bay, known for its friendly sea turtles, offers a unique experience for wildlife enthusiasts. For the more adventurous among us, Stocking Island provides opportunities for diving into blue holes and exploring underwater caves. Finally, the Tropic of Cancer Beach on Little Exuma offers a secluded and untouched beach for the ultimate peaceful relaxation.

With its expanding infrastructure and commitment to sustainable tourism, it’s safe to say that the Bahamas is firmly establishing itself as a leading year-round yachting destination. The Exumas, with their unique blend of natural beauty and modern amenities, are the perfect place to explore on a summer yacht charter in 2024 and beyond.
